ACTIVATION I (2026)
Project type
Spatial Audio
Date
September 2026
Location
Aarhus
ACTIVATION I is an electroacoustic surround sound work commissioned by ALTER Festival and composed by Oscar Friisgaard.
The work explores how listening shapes our experience of presence. Through an immersive 7.1 surround sound composition, the audience is invited into a spatial and bodily experience where attention is continuously drawn, disrupted, and reshaped.
Moving between clearly defined musical motifs and enveloping sonic textures, Activation I activates different modes of listening, shifting the listener's orientation between focused attention and immersion. Drawing on ideas from Pauline Oliveros and Salomé Voegelin, the work approaches listening as a way of becoming more sensitive to the fleeting and unstable qualities of the present.
The work was presented alongside a text based 'Listening Calibration' from Bureau For Listening. This contribution unfolded as a soft calibration; a momentary reorientation of attention, where listening is approached as a relational and situated practice. Through a short reading, moving between the meditative, the philosophical, and the essayistic, the work lingers in the thresholds of perception: where sound meets thought, where attention falters, where something else begins to emerge.
ACTIVATION I in complete darkness at the cinema 'Øst for Paradis' in Aarhus (DK) during ALTER Festival's opening days on September 10–11, 2026.
